I have been working in the higher education sector since 1994. My research interests include both the Victorian and Romantic periods, extending through a timespan definable as the Romantic Century, and I have teaching interests in the areas of the eighteenth century, modernism, twentieth-century and contemporary literature, and literary theory. My research interests lie in the areas of Religion and Literature, as reflected in my recent monograph on Charlotte M Yonge, and the relationship between literature and the history and philosophy of science, in particular medicine. I also have an interest in the potential contribution electronic scholarly resources can make to the study of print culture, which is reflected in my editing of the electronic text of the Quarterly Review, 1809-1822, the first two volumes of which have been published on the scholarly website Romantic Circles.
I am currently working on "Victorian Sages: Carlyle, Ruskin, Arnold" a short introductory study for the Writers and their Work series, which is under contract, and which I plan to submit in March 2008. My next full-length monograph will be on "Romanticism, Medicine and the Gothic", which will use Romantic period medical discourse to connect issues in Romantic poetics with the current theoretical preoccupation with spectrality. I intend to submit it to Palgrave in early 2009.
