I completed by BA, MA and PhD at the University of Nottingham, and was awarded my doctorate entitled 'Manor houses, churches and settlements: historical geographies of the Yorkshire Wolds before c.1600' in January 2007. I spent the early months of the year working for the Victoria County History in my native Yorkshire, before taking up my current post in the History Department at Hertforshire in September 2007.
Research Interests
My research to date has focused on the landscape history of Midland and Northern England over the long duree. I have recently published on the geographical relationships between manor houses and churches in the Yorkshire Wolds, a theme on which I am also writing a book. Other areas of interest include the role of female landowners in enclosure and estate improvement in 18th-century England, and popular politics and riot in 16th-century Yorkshire.Teaching specialisms
My teaching interests involve the landscape and social history of medieval and early modern England, with a particular focus on rural settlements and land-use. I have also recently taught courses on popular religion in fifteenth and sixteenth century Europe.Collaborations and Projects
I am currently employed as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow on the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project 'Changing Landscapes, Changing Environments: enclosure and culture in Northamptonshire, 1700-1900'.
